City Council Endorses PLA for Sacramento Arena Project

March 7, 2012 - As part of its plan to build a new sports arena at the downtown rail yard site, the Sacramento City Council voted to direct city staff to begin developing a PLA for the construction of the project.

The council voted 7-2 in favor of proceeding with the $391 million arena project, which combines financing from the City, the Sacramento Kings, and arena operator AEG.  Part of the motion directed the city staff to “evaluate and consider options for a project labor agreement and community benefit agreement” for the project.  That language signals the city’s desire to work closely with Building Trades unions to ensure the new arena is built to the highest standards of quality workmanship.

With a PLA, the Sacramento arena project will ultimately mean thousands of good jobs for the region’s construction workers.  The vote for a PLA is also a stinging defeat for ABC, which tried to avert this outcome by qualifying a measure for the ballot that would have banned PLAs on city projects, a ploy that fizzled when ABC failed to submit enough valid signatures.
