Strong Workers’ Rights Advocate

March 28, 2011 - Governor Jerry Brown has appointed Christine Baker as Chief Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Relations.  Baker was endorsed by organized labor for the post and, based on her record, promises to be a strong advocate for the rights of working people.

For the past 16 years, she has served as Executive Officer of the California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation (CHSWC) at the DIR. She has worked in other capacities at the DIR including Acting Deputy Director of the Division of Workers’ Compensation and Manager of the Audit and Enforcement Unit, as well as Chief of the Division of Labor Statistics and Research.

Under her leadership, CHSWC has grown in its role of overseeing the health, safety and workers’ compensation systems in California. She was honored with the Frances Perkins Award from the International Association of Accident Boards and Commissions, for “outstanding efforts in furthering accident prevention and safety in the workplace.”
