The built project was funded by the California’s Tobacco Tax Fund (Proposition 99) from 1999-2007, and in that time, developed numerous resources about cessation and prevention of tobacco use by construction and blue collar workers.  Many of these materials are still available in hard copy through the Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California (TECC):  www.tobaccofreecatalog.org  (search for “union”).

About Toxics and Tobacco

What is In the Curriculum

This curriculum encourages workers to view tobacco smoke as an occupational hazard. The health dangers of smokeless tobacco are also covered.

The curriculum is divided into four interrelated units. However, each unit can stand alone. Instructors can choose to adapt the choice, timing, order or content of the units to suit the particular needs of their classes. The units are:

Unit 1: Threats to Your Health on the Job

The first unit draws on students' experiences to introduce the basic concepts of how toxic substances affect the body.

Unit 2: Tobacco Threatens Everyone's Health

The second unit identifies the range of chemicals on the job that also are in tobacco smoke, and discusses the health effects of tobacco use and of secondhand smoke.

Unit 3: Investigating Chemical Hazards at Work

The third unit introduces students to the information and skills they need to investigate chemical hazards they may encounter on the job.

Unit 4: A. How to Make the Job Safer / B. An Action Plan

The last unit identifies the various options available for making the workplace safer. It assists students in developing specific strategies and skills for improving health and safety on their jobs.

The Instructor's Manual provides the instructor with all the material needed to teach each unit:

A statement of the learning objectives of each unit.

A Planning Guide for each unit.

A description of the learning activities and procedures for each unit, including detailed INSTRUCTIONS and DISCUSSION POINTS for teaching the unit.

Master copies of Handouts used in the curriculum. (You can make copies of all handouts for your students.)

A student handbook (Guide to Toxics on the Job) is also available.
