WorkSHIFTS - Workers in Minnesota get a tobacco education program.
The health and safety of workers has always been a primary concern of building trades unions in California. Five years ago when the State Building and Construction Trades Council initiated the BUILT project, few unions considered tobacco a health and safety issue for construction workers.
Now unions across the nation are realizing the importance of tobacco education. In Minnesota, the WorkSHIFTS project has begun to work with the labor community to address the health risks and economic consequences of tobacco in the workplace. Go to http://www.publichealthlawcenter.org/topics/tobacco-control and discover how this program involves labor in issues related to secondhand smoke in the workplace.
The Minnesota WorkShifts project website, in addition to the BUILT (www.sbctc.org/built) website contain excellent resources of tobacco education information for unions and union members.
