One of the most popular New Years resolutions is to quit tobacco use. If you're among the 70% of smokers who want to quit, January 1 could be the start of a new life for you. When you stop smoking you become healthier almost immediately. By the end of the year your health will have improved dramatically. Here's how your body repairs itself when you stop using tobacco.
Ø 20 minutes - Blood pressure drops to normal, pulse rate drops to normal, temperature of hands and feet increases to normal.
Ø 8 hours - Oxygen level in blood increases to normal.
Ø 24 hours - Carbon Monoxide in body is eliminated, chance of heart attack decreases.
Ø 48 hours - No nicotine is left in the body, sense of taste and smell improve.
Ø 72 hours - Bronchial tubes relax, breathing becomes easier.
Ø 2 weeks to 3 months - Circulation improves, lung function increases up to 30%.
Ø 1 to 9 months - Cilia regrow in lungs.
Ø 1 year - Risk of heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
Eventually, after 10 - 15 years, your lung cancer risk is about the same as non-smokers and your risk of heart attack may fall to the same as someone who has never smoked.
Because of the nicotine addiction most people focus on the negative side effects of quitting. Indeed, 50 - 60% of those who quit will feel irritable, restless, and depressed for a while. To quit for life focus on the good things that are happening to you.
